The Tweed is the artery that brings lifeblood to the valley it flows through, from its land-locked source in southern Scotland to its generous estuary in England at Berwick-upon-Tweed. This is the story of a journey along this remarkable river as it flows to the sea. Erica Reid describes the natural world of the valley, from otters to kingfishers, and the impact of humankind, from mortuaries for Victorian navvies to deserted medieval villages. She encounters many people who have a deep love for the Tweed, and they share their trove of stories with her. Some teach her how to search for Roman roads, how to monitor young salmon heading out to sea, and encourage her participation in counting the river birdlife. Along the way, she is introduced to the river’s cast of extraordinary char-acters which includes shepherds and boatmen, salmon fishers and diviners, meadow makers and weavers, archaeologists and dukes.
