This edited collection brings together case studies that ethnographically explore European forests as denaturalised, political-ecological entities. The collection represents the uneven geographies present in ‘green’ forest projects within emerging European economies of repair. Covering afforestation, reforestation, and plantations, among other forest mechanisms, case studies explore diverse forest-related challenges, including forest fires, timber harvests, non-timber forest product harvesting, mineral extraction, and recreation. In each case, contributors trace the political mechanisms that shape what a forest is and who gets to decide, transforming forests from neutral or natural entities into complex socio-ecological and power-laden constructions. — .
