Morphospatial Patterns in the Dinosauria: Contingent Emergence

What happens when the patterns in the fossil record raise questions that science alone cannot answer? A rigorous statistical analysis of dinosaur morphology reveals a world of discrete, stable biological groups—a finding that challenges contemporary reductionist philosophies. Traditional phylogenetic approaches seek branching topologies but overlook biological form. However, if biological forms exist, this necessitates a more profound philosophical investigation.This empirical discovery calls for a new interpretive lens. Drawing on Stephen J. Gould’s aptive triangle and the philosophical realist approaches of thinkers like Etienne Gilson and Michael Polanyi, this work argues that these patterns are genuine features of nature. The book’s goal is to provide the reader with a stronger philosophical framework, moving beyond flawed positivistic assumptions that prevent us from seeing biological structures as emergent ‘achievements of functional coherence’—and as such pointers to a deeper, contingent natural order.
