Urban Flora of Newcastle & North Tyneside

The first comprehensive account of the wild flora of the Newcastle and North Tyneside conurbation, one of the largest urban areas in the United Kingdom.

Based on six years of systematic fieldwork, by the author and other local botanists, this volume documents more than 1,120 native and naturalised plant species, representing approximately one-third of the British flora. It examines a wide range of urban habitats, from pavement crevices and industrial sites to wooded denes, wetlands and the River Tyne, demonstrating the coexistence of rare orchids, ballast flora, garden escapes and more familiar and widespread urban species.

This illustrated Flora provides an analysis of the region’s habitats, environmental history and changing plant assemblages. Detailed species accounts are complemented by discussions of taxa that are threatened, locally extinct, or recently established.

The publication has been supported by the Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland and members of the Natural History Society of Northumberland. A short section on Geology and Soils has been provided by Karl Egeland-Eriksen

The book will be of particular interest to botanists, ecologists, and conservation practitioners. It should also prove useful and informative for the keen naturalist as well as those simply curious about the surprising variety of nature in Newcastle and other urban areas
