Vegetation of Etna is a new study, that examines the plant communities currently found on the slopes of Mount Etna, an active volcano in northeastern Sicily. Mount Etna is one of the highest mountains in the Mediterranean. Its unique volcanic activity and soil structure set the entire environment apart. As a result, its flora and vegetation are highly distinct from the rest of Sicily and other Mediterranean countries. Millennia of geological, bioclimatic, and paleogeographic changes have shaped this volcano. These shifts are clearly reflected in Etna’s highly original flora, which is rich in rare, endemic species of great phytogeographical significance.
