This book records observations made and impressions formed during a journey through western and southern South America from Panama to Argentina and Brazil via the Straits of Magellan. Chief points of interest for each country lie in the areas of natural history, inhabitants (both native and settlers), relics of prehistoric civilisation, economic resources, industrial and commercial development prospects and the conditions of political life. James Bryce, later Viscount Bryce, was a professor of civil law and jurisprudence, noted historian, Member of Parliament, Ambassador to the United States and regular traveller, becoming influential in many areas, though not to be confused with the author of the same name who was responsible for the Flora of Arran.
