With 7000 species of plants currently listed , French Guiana is a hotspot for global biodiversity!
On the fringes of the dense forests that cover the Guiana Plateau and remain inaccessible to most of us, there is a coastal fringe that has a very different identity. Along the coastline, there is a diversity of natural environments: savannahs, rock savannahs, forests on white sands, mangroves, marshes, coastal forests, … all environments that shelter a particular vegetation.
It is in this coastal plain that the urban areas of Guyana are developing, the infrastructures, the areas cleared for agriculture and livestock farming, most often to the detriment of natural areas.
This guide is intended for Guyanese people who are interested in the natural heritage of their region, for those passionate about tropical plants and gardens, for botanists, whether beginners or experienced, for teachers, students, naturalists, etc.
