The first identification guide for all moss species occurring in Austria, which comprise about 58% of all mosses found in Europe

The text is in German with bilingual keys in German and English

In the advance information about the book it is noted that, with the development of modern molecular methods it is difficult to create identification keys that take systematics into account. Thus making it harder for beginners to gain a clear understanding of specific genera and families of mosses. The identification keys in the new moss flora are therefore not hierarchically structured according to systematic criteria, but rather take into account “artificially” morphological similarities between species. The family level is completely absent from the basic key, and genera are often identified as individual species.

The abundance of photographic illustrations in the books greatly facilitates identification. This work will make it possible to identify all mosses found in Austria (1105 species), as well as some species from neighboring countries that may yet be found in Austria.

The first volume also provides several introductory chapters. These cover the history of moss research, the morphology of mosses, Austria’s bryogeographical position, the value and uses of mosses, as well as tips for collecting and identifying mosses and using the book. Numerous species are endangered and are justifiably increasingly the focus of nature conservation efforts; therefore, there is also a chapter on the threats to and protection of mosses.A special chapter is dedicated to assigning moss species to their respective habitats.

These books are aimed at anyone who wants to learn more about this fascinating group of mosses and is also intended to serve as a useful bryological reference work for Austria.
