Original brown cloth with gilt spine titles and blind stamped floral cover image; lightly bumped corners and top and tail of spine, small loss to bottom of spine, a couple of tears to outer layer of spine, small stain to rear board, binding solid. Internally crisp, clean and bright with almost no age-toning or foxing. Includes 20 B&W plates in Fine condition. xii+573pp.+16pp. advs, each 2 page advert beginning with an attractive woodcut vignette. Author inscription to reverse of title-page, dated 23rd September 1840 (prior to its 1841 publication) addressed to Robert Kaye Grenville (1794-1866) an English mycologist, bryologist, and botanist who was also an accomplished artist and illustrator of natural history. The front pastedown contains the sought-after heraldic bookplate of the Victorian London antiquarian, book collector and notary James Comerford, JP, FSA (1806-1881); the crest includes the motto So ho ho dea ne, apparently an Old Norman-French hunting cry. After the death of Comerford in 1881 Sotheby sold his library at auction for a total of 8,372 13 GBP . A later ownership inscription can also be found in pencil to the front pastedown and reverse of the FFEP. Overall Very Good-. Photos available on request.
