This book explores how women sustain everyday security in one of Europe’s most fragile environments: Romania’s Danube Delta. Drawing on oral histories from Haholi Ukrainian women in the remote village of Sfântu Gheorghe, it reveals how care, food practices, ecological knowledge, and community ties support survival in a region shaped by environmental change, economic marginalization, and demographic decline.Rather than focusing on state institutions or military threats, the book shows how security emerges through daily labor: tending gardens, preserving food, caring for elders, and maintaining social networks. These practices form an often-invisible infrastructure that holds communities together as fisheries decline, migration increases, and climate pressures intensify.Combining feminist security theory with narrative oral history, the book offers an original perspective on human security in marginal environments. It will interest scholars and students of global security, gender studies, environmental change, Eastern European studies, and policymakers concerned with community resilience and sustainability.

'[This book] is sharp, compassionate, and analytically rigorous. The author listens first and builds a framework from what she hears. By centering women's accounts of environmental degradation and human insecurity, [she] develops an original gender security framework that reframes what counts as security in everyday life.'Kate Brannum, PhD,Chair of the Global Security Department, School of Security and Global Studies, American Public University System'The book introduces a new theoretical framework for gender security, grounded in women's lived experiences of environmental change, care, cultural continuity, and community resilience.
