1st edition. Book Condition: Good+.
Very scarce with the text and plates together.
Full green leather with 5 spine bands and gilt spine titles, profusely gilt tooled to spine and boards; AEG; marbled endpapers. Binding order: [6](blanks, title page & preface) + Frontis.(plateCIX) + pp.1-179(pp.177-179 being the index) + [1](List of the Woodcuts & Directions to the Binder) + [2](Cuvier title page+blank verso) + pp.1-198 (with pp. 197-8 being the plates index).
All 82 hand-coloured plates are bound with the relevant text. Cross-referencing the index at the rear, all the Macgillivray plates are present, however there are 5 bird plates that are listed in index but not found in the book, though there is no evidence of removal – these are mostly lettered or starred print numbers and may well have been produced after the first copies were bound, as often happened.
The green leather binding is scuffed and rubbed commensurate with age, with worn extremities. Front hinge and joint cracked – held but a little fragile. Gilt tooling and edging remains bright. General light thumb marks throughout. Entirely crisp with the exception of a 13mm tear to bottom of a single leaf and a bottom corner crease to the bottom of a single leaf. Illustration ‘shadows’ appear on the opposite blank pages, otherwise almost no foxing or age toning.
Overall a very collectible copy of this very scarce work, which was originally published in monthly parts from October 1835.
