Cytogenetics in Plant Breeding

A prerequisite for today’s plant breeders is a basic knowledge on chromosome structure and function as well as methods on chromosome analysis and engineering. After introductory chapters on meiosis, mitosis, and karyotype analysis, methods of the diagnosis of abnormalities encountered in the plant material, of gene transfer between forms and species, of gene fose manipulation (duplications, deficiencies, haploidy, polyploidy), and of manipulation of the genetic systems (allopolyploidization of autopolypolids, permanent translocation heterozygosity, hybrid breeding, apomixis) are described in detail.
