Three decades in the making, and produced in a two volume set, this is the seminal treatise on Heliamphora – The Marsh Pitcher Plants

980 pages long and crammed full of new discoveries, new observations, new information and hundreds of breath-taking new (previously unpublished) photographs, this spectacular set of books documents the full diversity and astoundingly intricate beauty of the entire genus Heliamphora in full detail for the very first time.

Introductory chapters include a detailed overview of the biogeography, ecology, remarkable adaptations and taxonomy of the genus.

The bulk of the work (over 700 pages) is dedicated to documenting all recognised Heliamphora species in alphabetical order. Each species profile includes detailed sections (written in clear and accessible language) covering morphology, diversity, ecology and conservation status. All species are depicted via lavish imagery (with as many as 40 photographs dedicated to the most variable species), and are accompanied by custom-made botanical illustrations and distribution maps.

All 24 recognised species of Heliamphora are documented in this work, namely: H. arenicola, H. ceracea, H. chimantensis, H. ciliata, H. collina, H. electrum, H. elongata, H. exappendiculata, H. folliculata, H. glabra, H. Heterodoxa, H. Hispida, H. huberi, H. ionasi, H. macdonaldae, H. minor, H.neblinae, H. nutans, H. parva, H. pulchella, H. purpurascens, H. sarracenioides, H. tatei and H. uncinata. Plus several incompletely diagnosed taxa are also included.

Concluding chapters comprise a thorough exploration of Heliamphora hybrids and a review of horticultural cultivars, followed by a uniquely detailed discussion of the conservation status of the genus.

In this work’s extensive appendix, a series of fascinating expedition reports are presented, providing important context and gripping stories concerning the discovery of various Heliamphora. The appendix includes:

  • An account of populations of Heliamphora macdonaldae and H. tatei on Cerro Duida and Cerro Huachamacari.
  • An account of the Heliamphora of the Neblina Massif.
  • An account of the Heliamphora of Karaurín Tepui.
  • An account of the Heliamphora of Ptari Tepui
  • An account of the Heliamphora of Waukauyengtipu.
  • An account of the destruction of the El Dorado Swamp and the loss of Heliamphora populations below the cliffs of Mount Roraima.
