Uplands and Birds, New Naturalist volume 142
Ian Newton, author of Farming and Birds and Bird Migration returns to the New Naturalist series with a long awaited look at the uplands and its birds. The uplands of Britain are unique landscapes created by grazing animals, primarily livestock. The soils and blanket bogs of the uplands are also the largest stores of carbon in the UK. And 70% of the country’s drinking water comes from the uplands. It’s a significant region, not least to the multitudes of bird species that hunt, forage and nest there.
Once again in Uplands and Birds, Ian Newton demonstrates his mastery of the subject matter at hand. A beautifully illustrated, authoritative addition to the New Naturalist series.
As new condition. Leather bound with NN monogram to the front cover, gilt title on the spine and gilt on all edges. Tipped-in limitation plate to the front endpaper, signed by the author and indicating 50 numbered copies were released. The plate is also marked with a letter ‘B’ (a very small number of these special editions were marked with a letter rather than a number, often signifying designation for a contributor or special collection). In addition, the traditional New Naturalist dustjacket is provided and has been signed by the artist and designer, Robert Gillmor, on the front inside flap. Presented in brown, cloth covered slip case.
