First published 1847, these early editions, vol 1 undated and vol. 2 dated 1849, may originally have matched in their blind stamped cloth bindings with gilt spine titles, though whilst one remains teal-green, the other is green fading to brown on the spine; both a little worn and lightly marked; front hinges cracked, top joint of vol. 1 starting. Internally generally crisp and clean with a little age toning. Some soiling to endpapers. Vol. 1 free of foxing; some foxing to the first and final few leaves of vol. 2. Pencil notes to the rear of the vol. 1 FFEP. Inscription to FEP of vol. 2. Closed edges dust dulled. In-text illustrations throughout.
