Stretching from its source in Y Bannau Brycheiniog and reaching the sea at Newport, the River Usk is the longest river flowing solely within Wales. Despite being a site of special scientific interest and a conservation area, it is also one of the most polluted rivers in the UK. In Secret Usk, Angela Evans deciphers the Usk’s past and its many uses overtime whilst also considering its present through riverside walks and conversations with people who know the river intimately. She considers that this story is not simply one of decline, but something far more complex and interesting. Woven into our collective consciousness, rivers have always been important in our lives. Considering this evolving relationship, may prompt new ideas for how we protect their future.
