Scarce early edition with interesting provenance.
The revised 2nd edition (first edition publ. 3 years earlier in 1791) comprising 3 books bound as 2 volumes as standard, later rebound in half tan leather with beige cloth, 5 spine bands and gilt spine titles and decoration; lightly marbled endpapers; top edges gilt. Vol. 1: vii (Dedication) + iv (Translation of the Quotations) + iii (Catalogue of the Prints) + 340pp. Vol. 2: iv (Translation of the Quotations in Vol. 2 & Errata for both volumes) + 310pp. + 30pp. (Addenda) + xx (Index for both volumes).
30 sepia/tinted aquatint plates (by Samuel Alkin & Sawry Gilpin) incl. maps.
Generally crisp, clean and bright inside and out, though with the following issues: P15/16 missing; two leaves with small tears and 1 leaf with loss to bottom corner, all confined to margins; variable foxing throughout, many leaves and plates with none at all; minimal age toning. The final photograph shows an example of the worst of the foxing, of which there are only a few leaves.
Heraldic bookplate to FEPs of The Honourable Gerald William Lascelles CB (1849–1928), Deputy Surveyor of the New Forest from 1880 to 1914 and writer of the well regarded book Thirty Five Years in the New Forest, amongst other titles.
Overall a lovely set of this scarce early edition with interesting provenance.
