Very scarce. Undated; BL has a copy claiming 1888; advertised in both Chambers Selected Catalogue 1892 and W. & R. Chambers’s Books, Suitable for Prizes and Presentation [1892]: “the Dog, Cat, Horse, and Elephant. With numerous Illustrations.”
9 B&W plates incl. frontis + numerous illustrations and vignettes within the text.
Red cloth boards with gilt spine and cover titles, black floral decoration to cover and spine, gilt dog image to cover, brown cat image to spine; lightly bumped with a little spine fade. Internally crisp and clean with light age toning and spotting to the first and final few leaves, moreso to the endpapers and outside edges of the textblock. Cracked front hinge but remaining firmly bound. Moderately cocked. Prize label of the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals pasted to FFEP, presented to William McGregor of Cambuslang School, undated but label printed with 1913.
