1832 second edition in quarto binding with tan leather spine with gilt titles on black leather label; marbled boards. Boards a little rubbed with wear to corners; a small amount of loss to the marble paper and a small stain; hinges cracked but firmly held. Internally, with the exception of a tear to the final textual leaf, the textblock remains remarkably crisp and clean, with very little age toning and spotting only affecting the first and final few leaves. ‘Literary Institution’ stamp to bottom of title page. Heraldic bookplate of William Wickham to FEP, descendant of Bishop William of Wykeham (1324–1404), who was also a notable figure in the family tree of Jane Austen and, known both for his stern correction of ecclesiastical abuses and for his remarkable philanthropy, inspired the characters of both Darcy and Wickham in Pride and Prejudice [JASNA.org].
