Traditional Japanese gardens combine aesthetics with ethics in a perfectly curated celebration of nature. A Japanese garden is the natural world made miniature: rocks represent mountains, ponds represent seas. Featuring beautiful photographs and insightful insights into historical and contemporary culture, Japanese Gardens is a must-have for any gardening or zen enthusiast. At the heart of a Japanese garden is a key sense of harmony with nature. More than simply a landscape of trees and flowering shrubs, a Japanese garden is a place of serenity and rest, filled with peaceful spots that lend themselves to meditation and contemplation, and invite a sense of calm. Japanese Gardens celebrates and illustrates this ideal, showcasing the exquisite natural beauty with examples of quintessentially Japanese gardens.

Author Biography

Isaki Kasahara works at Toshi Landscape Inc., a comprehensive landscaping company based in Ebisu, Shibuya, Tokyo, where she is active across a wide range of tree-related fields including planting management, tree diagnosis, and planting consulting. The company handles over 500 projects a year — from private residences to condominiums, office buildings, and public green spaces — with a specialist team led by certified tree doctors managing every stage from planning to completion. In graduate school, Kasahara researched plant secondary metabolism and metabolic biochemistry, and the scientific eye she cultivated there — elucidating what cannot be seen — combined with her hands-on field experience, gives her a uniquely informed perspective. Drawing on her deep knowledge of trees and landscapes, she hopes to share with an international audience the living traditions, aesthetic sensibility, and profound relationship between people and plants that Japanese gardens embody. She lives in Tokyo, Japan.
