[Burrell and Tyler] have produced what is most likely the most complete work on the subject. -- John Bagnasco Garden Compass 20060901 This thorough and reliable book is the most up-to-date available on the genus at present. -- Tony Lord Plantsman 20060901 The allure of the Christmas rose and the remarkable availability of the Lenten rose have heightened the rising popularity of these treasured perennials. Co-authors Colston Burrell and Judith Knott Tyler capture all of this and bring to light many of the new seed strains and hybrids in this monograph on the Helleborus genus. -- Richie Steffen American Gardener 20060901 Every hellebore enthusiast will find it indispensable. -- Graham Rice Garden (Peterborough) 20060701 Achieves a very nice balance between being an authoritative monograph and a practical guide with lots of good photographs. -- Thomas Cooper American Gardener 20070301 A great handbook for the casual gardener, with poetic descriptions, detailed cultural information, and design ideas. This is the one book all hellebore addicts should add to their shelves this year. -- Sara Begg Horticulture 20070201 What makes this book especially appealing are the shared experiences of the well-known and respected breeders and growers of the genus. With outstanding photographs of the wild species and prized hybrids ... this book is at the top of any list of monographic presentations. -- Peter Kendall Rhododendron News 20070401 This will be the definitive book on hellebores for years to come. -- Mary Jane P. Baker Trillium 20070501 This monograph helps gardeners appreciate the diversity among the species, the excitement of finding new characteristic combinations, and the enthusiasm of sharing in the gardening community both here and abroad. -- Sandra J. Sandefur Perennial Notes 20061001 Comprehensive in its treatment of the various hellebore species and their cultivation, and ... complete in its descriptions without being so dense with taxonomic jargon as to leave regular gardeners - folks without botanical training - baffled. -- Linda Beutler Hardy Plant Society of Oregon Bulletin 20070601 With outstanding photographs of wild species and prized hybrids, ... with sources for hellebores, with appendices on medicine, black death, nutrient study, and cut flowers, this book is at the top of any list of monographic presentations. -- Peter Kendall American Rhododendron Society Journal 20070701 It would be hard to imagine anyone writing another book about hellebores for at least a decade to come - this volume is so complete. -- Molly Day All the Dirt on Gardening 20080202

Author Biography

C. Colston Burrell is a garden designer, award-winning author, photographer, naturalist, and teacher. He grows hellebore species and hybrids alongside natives and other treasures in his garden in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Charlottesville, Virginia. Colston holds two master's degrees: one in horticulture and one in landscape architecture from the University of Minnesota. He is a lecturer in the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of Virginia and principal of Native Landscape Design and Restoration. He is the author of many garden books and has twice won the American Horticulture Society book awarda"in 2007 for Hellebores: A Comprehensive Guide and in 1998 for A Gardener's Encyclopedia of Wildflowers. Colston is a contributing editor for Horticulture and frequently writes for Landscape Architecture and American Gardener. He lectures internationally on design, plants, and ecology. Judith Knott Tyler and her husband, Richard Tyler, have owned and operated Pine Knot Farms since 1982 on land that has been in Judith's family for six generations. Pine Knot is a wholesale and retail nursery specializing in herbaceous perennials, with an emphasis on hellebores. An artist by training, Judith channels her creativity into making gardens, layering the forms and textures of plants into living sculptures that change with the seasons. Judith brings a magnitude of life experience to her nursery work including time spent landscaping, producing vegetables for a communal farm in Canada, and even tutoring underprivileged children. Hellebores fascinate Judith because as she says, "Any plant brave enough to reach its peak flowering time during the dull days of late winter, deserves a place of pride in most gardens. If we consider the wide range of conditions many of the species will tolerate, there is truly a hellebore for almost any garden."
