The overall aim of this book is to provide objective information on the technical possibilities and limitations of the use of electronic identification and monitoring with animals. Basic principles of data transfer via radiowaves are explained, so that users are able to optimize their own applications, or to evaluate devices which are currently available on the market. Examples of applications are described in detail, including extensions with electronic monitoring. These applications include animal husbandry (e.g. feeding stations, oestrous detection, disease prevention), and the transport and slaughtering of animals, including integral chain quality control. Some applications within the field of companion, zoo, laboratory and wildlife animals are also described. Examples of cost-benefit analysis are discussed in detail in relation to farm animal applications. Finally, available equipment is reviewed. The book is aimed at a wide range of animal scientist, zoologists and applied engineers.
