Author Biography
- Professor Stefan Buczacki is equally well known as the presenter of many hundreds of radio and television gardening programmes and as one of the country's most experienced non-fiction authors with well over fifty published titles on natural history, gardening and biography, many for HarperCollins. He is a graduate of the Universities of Southampton and Oxford and holds distinctions and awards from many scientific societies as well as honorary degrees from Liverpool John Moores and Derby Universities.
- George Peterken is one of Britain's leading woodland ecologists and conservationists. Working with the Nature Conservancy and its successor organisations, he initiated the Ancient Woodland Inventory and helped negotiate the nature conservation aspects of the Government's 1985 Broadleaves Policy, which he later helped implement as Nature Conservation Adviser to the Forestry Commission. Since 1992, he has worked independently as a consultant while living in the Lower Wye Valley, where he has also been involved in developing community grassland conservation projects with local neighbours. His research has focused on nature conservation, natural woodland, and the long-term, large-scale dynamics of woodland ecology, interests that were further developed during a Bullard Fellowship at Harvard University. Peterken has held a number of prominent positions, including President of Gwent Wildlife Trust and Associate Professor at the University of Nottingham. A prolific author, his publications include Woodland Conservation and Management (1981), Natural Woodland (1996), Wye Valley (2008), Meadows (2013), Woodland Development: A Long-Term Study of Lady Park Wood (2017), and Art Meets Ecology (2020). Born into a New Forest family, he now lives in the Lower Wye Valley. In recognition of his services to forestry, he was awarded an OBE in 1994.
