This volume is a scientific master textbook of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences which, addressing contemporary issues, proffers solutions to the prevailing challenges confronting our crops, soil and environment today. It encompasses current ideas and terminologies as applied to crop plant taxonomy, which addresses the meaning, characteristics, importance, and floral formulae of various crop taxa. This handbook also contains annotated diagrams showing different current crop plant cells, tissues, organs, and systems as well as their physiology. The physiology of crop plants on photosynthesis, phosphorylation, photorespiration, photosynthetic efficiency and the source-sink relationship is explored. It also covers seed dormancy (meaning, types, importance, and causes), essential crop plant nutrient elements, organic matter, synthetic fertilizer, methods of nutrient absorption in crop plants, factors influencing crop nutrient absorption, meaning, characteristics, classification, and types of enzymes, soil amendment/fertilizer maintenance, as well as agriculture – climate relations with respect to diseases and pests.

Dr Brown Mang Onwuka is a distinguished soil scientist and climatology researcher with a specialization in Soil Physics and Conservation, particularly Soil Climatology. He holds a PhD in Soil Physics and Conservation from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Nigeria, where his doctoral research focused on the spatial and temporal distribution of soil hydrothermal properties and their relationships with climate variability in Abia State, Nigeria. Dr Onwuka is currently serving as a Lecturer in the Department of Water Resources Management and Agrometeorology at MOUAU.Dr K. O. Orji obtained his BAgric (Crop Science) and MSc (Crop Production) degrees from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 2004 and 2014, respectively. He obtained his PhD in Crop Production and Physiology from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Nigeria in 2019. He was the Examination Officer in the Department of Agronomy, which is now the Department of Crop and Horticultural Sciences, between the 2019/2020 and 2024/2025 academic sessions. Currently, he is the Deputy Dean of the College of Crop and Soil Sciences.Uchenna Jonathan Nwokeh is a soil microbiologist and has conducted several research activities on plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria. His research has extended to the study of bacterial activities around the plant rhizosphere.
