Designed Landscapes and Gardens of the Yorkshire Coast, 1700-1900 explores the history of landscape parks and gardens at the Yorkshire coast. The reader journeys through aristocratic estates whose owners designed landscapes with towers and gazebos to incorporate views of the sea, a powerful symbol of trade and naval supremacy that stirred up patriotic sentiments, to iconic landscapes such as Flamborough Head and its caves which were viewed with the thrill of danger. Public promenades offered more sedate pleasures or the middle classes relaxed amid the large villa gardens that were beginning to appear and even cemeteries were designed with promenading in mind. Generously illustrated with present-day photographs, plans and historical illustrations Designed Landscapes and Gardens of the Yorkshire Coast, 1700-1900 provides a fascinating exploration of how wealthy Georgians and Victorians used the sea to create new landscapes along the Yorkshire Coast, reinterpreting many taken-for-granted local beauty spots along the coast and rediscovering forgotten promenades and public gardens as well as celebrating the garden heritage that remains to the present day.
