This book is not only a Festschrift dedicated to honor the work of Prof Randall W. Davis but also encapsulates more than 50 years of marine vertebrate research. Prof Davis’ professional life has been marked by (at least) three major highlights: 1. Research on the behavioral, morphologic, and physiologic adaptations of mammals, birds, and reptiles for aquatic life: 109 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, two first-author books, and one monograph 2. Development of animal-borne technology that extends our understanding of the life history, behavior, ecology, and evolutionary adaptations of aquatic animals, high-lighting marine mammals, penguins, sea turtles, and sharks at sea: 39 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. Eight Instrumentation Development grants from NSF and NOAA 3. Research on applied conservation, including the effects of oil on the thermoregulation of fur-bearing marine mammals and methods to mitigate the impact: 12 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, one book, and one U.S. Patent We view this “Festschrift in honor of…” not simply that, but the chance to encapsulate major parts of the past 50‒60 years of research on Antarctic pinnipeds; and more lately sea otters, sharks, turtles, sperm whales, and a host of other marine vertebrate species. This book will thus be especially valuable for undergraduate and graduate students in the marine sciences, but will also be enjoyed by established researchers and educators, especially in marine animal physiology and behavior.
