1st edition. Book Condition: Fair.
An unusual collection in an interesting binding.
Contemporary brown paper binding with leather spine strip, in poor condition with fragile covers. The binding consists of several thin layers including some original paper covers from Curtis’ magazine as well as some brown ‘scrap’ paper containing some contemporary writing, some of which may be notes for a printer, as well as what looks like part of an 1824 receipt for ‘first class paper’ from the mill.
Inside contains 51 hand-coloured plates and corresponding text (bar a few instances), with one facing the other, taken variously from 6 volumes of Curtis’ Botanical Magazine, dated 1815 to 1825, plus part of George Graves’ 1822 1st edition Monograph on the British Grasses. These are bound as follows:
Vol. 48 (1821) title page, #2263-4 text only, #2265-#2272 text & plates, Vol. 48 index; Vol. 43 (1815) #1771-1778 text & plates; Vol. 48 (again) #2203-2208 text & plates; Vol. 47 (1820) #2139-2146 text & plates; Vol. 42 (1815) #1757-1763 text & plates; Vol. 52 (1825) #2523-2530 text and plates with the exception of #2528 which is text only; Vol. 49 (1822) #2356-2363 text & plates with the exception of #2361 which is text only; then finally a selection from text and plates from Graves’ 1st edition Monograph on the British Grasses: 33,34,54,130 text and plates, 114 & 42 plate only, 56 text only. One of the Graves plates contains the 1821 watermark indicating a first printing.
In general the textblock remains clean and bright with lightly bumped corners, the exception being the first few leaves and plates which are stained brown around the margins. Most of the plates are in Very Good+ condition, including the folding plates. Overall 2 plates have become separated with a third being quite loose, which are more bumped and toned around the edges.
