Volume 1 concludes the publication of the 4-volume series: Monograph of the Leguminosae of France. It has been published after the others primarily to ensure that all the taxa from the series were included in the general key.
It also covers the following three groups.
1) Non-papilionaceous legumes, primarily of tropical origin. Their classification has evolved considerably in recent years, and this has been another contributory factor in the delay in publication of this volume.
2)Tthe predominantly tropical papilionaceous tribes. These are poorly represented in the flora of France.
3) The Loteae tribe, in its modern sense.
In general, this volume follows the approach adopted in previous volumes; i.e. to treat species broadly, excluding varieties with low hardiness; and to systematically revise classical taxonomic approaches in the light of the most recently published phylogenetic studies.
The opening chapter presents an overview of the Leguminosae family. The central focus here is the history of its classification. It also includes elements of pharmacognosy and toxicology as this family plays an important role in these two disciplines (the species accounts also include this information). Similarly, the ethnobotanical uses of these plants are briefly listed.
The inclusion of digitized images of fresh plants are anticipated to facilitate identification.
