Scarce 1st edition of the very first book published in the Wayside and Woodland series. Blue cloth with gilt and black spine and cover titles, gilt floral decoration to covers and title capitals, round edges; rubbed, especially to extremities, but clean and unbumped. Dust dulled textblock edges. Internally there is tanning to endpapers and title pages but otherwise only light toning throughout and almost no foxing. The textblock remains crisp however there are numerous small thumb marks from use. “With coloured figures of 156 species; black and plates of 22 species; and clear descriptions of 400 species.”
