The New Naturalist series, published by Harper Collins, began in 1945. Along with other developments post WWII, such as the formation of National Parks, this can be seen as both a response to and a catalyst of, a 'rediscovery' and interest in the British countryside. New Naturalist books have since become an iconic series which continues to be widely read from generation to generation. The authors of the books are usually eminent experts, often professional scientists. This gives the series authority, and many are or have been authoritative introductory textbooks on a subject for some years. The books are written in scientific style, but are intended to be readable by the non-specialist, and are an early example of popular science in the media. Over 100 volumes have been produced to date with more in preparation and the books are perennial best sellers.
In 2009 Harper Collins made the whole backlist available as facsimile versions that are produced on demand, allowing readers to complete their collection. Currently these have a RRP of £65/copy and can be supplied to order. Many collectors prefer original issues and we carry a wide range of second hand copies, some of which are quite scarce and sought after, others are good reading copies at affordable prices. Not all of these are put up on the site so please contact us if you cannot see what you require.
If you buy new volumes regularly, we would suggest setting up a standing order. New volumes as they come out are then supplied immediately following publication, at our current offer price AND post free. Please contact us if you are interested in setting up a standing order either by e-mailing us as firstname.lastname@example.org or by telephone 01768210909.
