A history of plant-hunting in China in the context of botanical work, of the art of gardens, and of the paintings which portrayed flowers and gardens; of the history of China; and of the intellectual, political and commercial pressures exerted by Europe on the East. Chinese civilization has provided great inspiration to the West ever since travellers began visiting there in the 12th century. Their artistic ability, noted here in the context of gardens, and the vast territory scarcely explored by the West, provided a fruitful questing ground for new specimens for 19th century plant hunters. The influence of the West and its increasing contact with China in modern times is also discussed.
