Hand Lenses |
We stock a small range of hand lenses, in brushed metal or weather resistant chrome finish, for use by botanists and field naturalists. Each lens is hinged, with a fold-away facility, and built to give long service in the field.
We have recently extended the range of lenses stocked.
Noteworthy additions include:
Scale loupes that incorporates a graduated scale. This should be particularly useful for sizing objects both in the field and indoors.
An illuminated lens which should also prove useful both indoors and out.

SOME GENERAL NOTES ON HAND LENSES
Some of the lenses we stock are constructed as a simple doublet, others as triplets and often cemented together, to give improved chromatic (color) correction. Some lenses are aplanatic, this reduces distortion at the margins of lens and blurring. Achromatic lenses focus different wavelengths of light, typically red and blue, in a similar focal plane to give a sharper image. Lenses in a black mount reduce peripheral glare.
Lower magnification lenses give a better depth of field. Wider diameter lenses are better in lower light levels than smaller diameter lenses, although the optically usable part of in all but the best wide diameter lenses is a smaller area near the center.
